Kelly Collins, author, psychic-medium, consultant, musician, artist, writer, teacher, Reiki master, spiritual life coach. First, above all else, I am a very spiritual person. I believe in the pursuit of truth and a true relationship with the Divine. I believe in allowing the fullness of the Divine to work within my life and not be bound by traditional roadblocks.

When we work to have a direct connection to the Divine every day, we enhance our lives so that anything is possible. We manifest things in our lives, good and bad, and we have the power to determine what those manifestations will be by what we focus on in life.
As a psychic-medium, I co-host an internet radio talk show called, The Awakening.  While we do readings on the show, we work to help our listeners have a deeper sense of their spiritual selves.

The Awakening airs on www.peoplestvnetwork.com Channel 4 every Tuesday night from 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm est.  You can find our more at our website, www.theawakeningpsychics.com.

In 2009, Kelly was honored by being nominated for the IPAA Award for Best Upcoming Psychic.
My other interests include art and music.  Together with my husband, James, we play traditional and modern Celtic Music.  Our duo, Rebel 16, plays at local taverns and pubs.As a writer, I want to write books that the readers will be interested in and characters they will really care about.  “Rise of the Shadows” is the first book in a trilogy about the Fey Realm and those who reside there.  The draft of the second book in nearly complete and continues with the adventures of Helen and Ian and their Fey friends.

Blue Creek native publishes her first fantasy novelBy Clint Thomas

Blue Creek native Kelly Hunt Collins has many titles: wife, mother, grandmother, psychic/medium, consultant, musician, artist, teacher, Reiki master, spiritual life coach, Internet radio talk show host - and author of the fantasy novel, "The Rise of the Shadows - Book 1 of the Fey Chronicles."

Collins said her affinity for fantasy literature began as a girl growing up in the Elk River area.

"I have been interested in the fantasy genre since the fifth grade. We had a substitute teacher at Kenton Elementary that year. After lunch every day, he would read to us a portion of 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R. Tolkien. I was fascinated with the story and about otherworldly creatures such as elves, dwarves and dragons. I have always been imaginative and Tolkien's books really spoke to me. I read the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy and 'The Hobbit' until the covers wore off the books. I also love books by Robert Jordan and Piers Anthony as well as Stephen King."

While working in human resources for nearly two decades, she kept steadfast her longtime dream of becoming a published author.

"I had always written stories from the time I could write," Collins said. "I would make up ghost stories and tell my friends. I continued writing but never tried to get anything published for years. My first novel I attempted to get published was a historical romance. It was not accepted and still sits on my shelf. I do not know if I will ever try to get it published. I am more interested in writing fantasy, instead.

"The idea for the book is hard to describe. I just sat down one day with a thought, and, 30-odd pages later, I had the beginnings of a novel. I kept writing every day, and, within about a month's time, the book was complete."

Collins provided a synopsis of her debut fantasy endeavor.

"'The Rise of the Shadows' is about two modern-day mages who are part of an ancient prophecy to save the Faerie Realm from the shadows that are threatening to take it over. There is a mimic who has the ability to take the form of anyone it chooses, who infiltrates the Fey Council. The good guys realize this, but have to determine which one of the council members is the mimic.

"I introduce some new creatures - malicans and grimlei - to give new villains to the fantasy world. There is a dragon who works with and teaches the human mages, along with an Elven elder, Master Scorra; his wife, Marrakhet, who is a halfling of the gods; Fey warriors, who are larger versions of faeries but look a little more like gargoyles; Elven warriors; faerie folk and a cat named Theo. I wrote in some humor, some places where people have cried, good suspense and really worked to develop the characters well."

While the settings, characters and circumstances of her first novel exist in a universe founded and grounded in imagination, the author said she hopes her story resonates on a personal level with its readers.

"What I hope that people get from the book," said Collins, "is the opportunity to let the stresses of everyday life go away for a while; allow them to be a kid again and just enjoy a fully formed fantasy realm in which the characters really speak to them.

"A friend of mine described one of the characters, Solas, as someone he could sit down and have a beer with. I thought it was a great compliment."

"The Rise of the Shadows - Book 1 of the Fey Chronicles," as the title suggests, is the first in a planned trilogy of novels - and perhaps even an ongoing series - by Collins.

"I am currently working on the second installment of the series, 'Soul Splinters - Book 2 of the Fey Chronicles,' in the Fate series. I have an outline for Book 3 and have plans to write a prequel and possibly books on the various characters in the novels," she said.

The daughter of Phyllis and David Hunt, Collins was born on July 23, 1967, and grew up in the Blue Creek/Elkview area. She attended Herbert Hoover High School, transferring to Elk Valley Christian School and graduating with honors from the Elkview school in 1984.

She also attended the University of Charleston after high school and acquired a bachelor's degree in business administration from Kennedy Western University.

Collins lives in Kentucky, with her husband James. (The couple also perform traditional and contemporary Celtic music in their band, Rebel 16, in area pubs and clubs.)

"The Rise of the Shadows - Book 1 of the Fey Chronicles" sells for $21.95 and is now available via Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble's bookstores and website.
